Our process
A proper deck restoration is much more than simply pressure washing and applying stain. Our process is designed to restore the wood correctly, protect it long term, and create a finish that holds up against harsh weather, heavy use, and cottage environments.
Every proper deck restoration starts with preparation and cleaning before any pressure washing begins. First, the deck gets inspected for structure, algae buildup, and failing stain. Furniture gets removed and surrounding areas including plants and decor are protected and/or removed. The deck is then swept clean so dirt and debris are not trapped during washing.
Unlike basic pressure washing companies, we start the restoration process with a professional wood cleaner. Most commonly this is a sodium percarbonate cleaner for organic buildup and weathered wood, or a stronger stripper if old stain is heavily failing. This step is extremely important because the chemicals break down dirt, mildew, algae, dead wood fibers, and old coatings deep inside the grain before pressure is used. Once the cleaner has had time to dwell, the deck is pressure washed using controlled pressure and wide fan tips to safely rinse contaminants without gouging the wood. After washing, the deck is then left to fully dry for at least 24 hours before sanding begins.

Once the wood has dried completely, the sanding process begins. This is one of the most important stages in achieving a premium final finish. Sanding removes raised grain, splinters, remaining coating residue, and weather-damaged wood fibers get left behind after years of exposure. It also creates a smooth and uniform surface that allows stain to penetrate evenly and bond properly.
Large deck surfaces are sanded using professional floor and orbital sanding equipment, while railings, stairs, edges, and detailed areas are completed with smaller precision sanders. The sanding process is carefully balanced to smooth the surface without over-closing the wood pores, which can reduce stain penetration.
Once sanding is complete, all dust and debris are fully removed from the surface, cracks, and corners to ensure the stain bonds directly to clean wood rather than sitting on leftover sanding residue.

The final stage is applying a premium stain designed to protect and preserve the wood long term. We primarily use oil-based, semi-transparent penetrating stains because they soak deep into the wood instead of sitting heavily on the surface. We apply this stain in controlled coats to ensure proper absorption, even coverage, and long-term durability without surface buildup or peeling.
Unlike cheaper coating systems, our restoration process does not rely on thick surface sealers that peel and trap moisture over time. Instead, we use penetrating stain systems that both protect and seal the wood naturally while allowing it to breathe properly through changing seasonal conditions.
Staining is only completed under proper weather conditions to ensure ideal curing and absorption. We do not rush to complete nor do we gamble on the weather.
The result is a cleaner finish, deeper wood protection, easier future maintenance, and a restored deck built to withstand cottage weather and heavy seasonal use.

Why bare wood
Only bare-wood restoration ensures stain bonds deep into the grain, for seasons, not weeks. We skip no steps. Every inch is prepped, sanded, and sealed to weather Ontario's freeze-thaw cycles without cracking, peeling, or lifting.
